Towards structuring maintenance and recycling value chains in Africa

Movin’On Africa brought together three experts from the field to explore how to structure maintenance and recycling value chains in Africa—an essential but still too often underestimated lever for more sustainable mobility.

  • Michael Wanyama – Founder & Director, Autosafety - Uganda

  • Hannes Scheepers – Corporate Sales Manager, Innovation Group South Africa (Allianz Partners)

  • Jacques Ouattara – President, Union of Garage Owners of Côte d'Ivoire

The discussion highlighted contrasting realities: ageing fleets and largely informal practices in Uganda; a more structured and regulated ecosystem in South Africa; and ongoing efforts to modernise and digitalise garages in Côte d’Ivoire.

Despite these differences, common challenges are emerging: insufficient regulation, a lack of technical standards, the circulation of counterfeit parts and poorly structured value chains.

Key takeaways included the need to structure maintenance ecosystems, invest in skills development, harness digitalisation to improve traceability and accountability, and adapt regulatory frameworks to local contexts. Stronger cooperation between countries will also be essential to bring solutions to scale.

At Movin’On, we are convinced that the transition to sustainable, inclusive and competitive mobility also depends on what happens behind the scenes: maintenance, skills development and the structuring of value chains.
