Under what conditions can automated mobility strengthen public transport rather than compete with it?

Building on the recent position paper from the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), this discussion with Mohamed Mezghani, Secretary General of the UITP, explores the expected benefits, the main barriers and the levers for bringing automated vehicles integrated into public transport to scale.

In its publication « How Can Public Transport Pave the Way for the Next Phase of Automated Mobility? », the UITP puts forward a simple yet powerful idea: when properly integrated into public transport, automated vehicles can improve service quality, serve more people across a wider area, and make services more inclusive, sustainable and resilient.

It also stresses that, beyond technological maturity, the promise of automated mobility depends on service quality, access for underserved populations and operational efficiency.

A valuable discussion to help shape mobility that is more sustainable, inclusive and credible over the long term.
