The road has revolutionised our societies. It makes travel easier, brings people closer together, and supports the development of trade and industry. While it symbolises freedom, discovery and progress, it is now at the heart of growing environmental concerns.
The road is raising concerns about its impact on the environment: biodiversity loss, pollution of natural environments, land take and CO2 emissions. Our relationship with the car is changing and, as a result, the sustainability of our road infrastructure has become a crucial issue, making headlines in the news.
Today, society appears increasingly opposed to the idea of expanding the road network, while regulation is becoming more stringent.
Are citizens losing trust in the road? Can it truly transform to meet the goals of the transition and sufficiency? Ultimately, have we reached the end of the road?
