As African cities have one of the highest urbanization rates in the world, they are expected to be home to up to 70% of the continent’s population by 2050. This means planning must already adapt to the needs of essential services such as healthcare, education, housing and mobility in cities that are already under pressure.

Most African cities also face the challenge of urban sprawl. They are expanding and developing faster than public transport services, making travel—particularly commuting between home and work—increasingly difficult. In the absence of integrated public transport systems, appropriate regulations or simply sufficient road infrastructure, widely used forms of transport known as “informal” have emerged over the past 30 years to meet people’s mobility needs, particularly those living in more remote or underserved areas.

In this episode, we explore the challenges facing African policymakers as they plan mobility and transport alongside housing policies that must address not only socio-economic issues, but also road safety and climate change adaptation.
