How can we give waste a new status to accelerate its treatment across Europe?
Today, almost 95% of a vehicle is recycled.
In reality, the figure is 85% if we exclude the 10% attributed to “recovery” (energy recovered by burning vehicle parts). Of the 85% of materials that are recycled or reused, many undergo “downcycling” (recycling for lower-quality uses).
The rise of electric vehicles is “mechanically” reducing the share of the use phase in a vehicle’s lifecycle carbon footprint, since these vehicles no longer consume fossil fuels. Vehicle recycling therefore makes a greater contribution to the vehicle’s overall footprint, while opening up new opportunities to transform recycling—until now largely “small-scale and local”—into a genuine European industry.
This transformation will require cross-border flows, representing a fundamental shift for the automotive industry.
