Paris, Berlin, London, Madrid… In Europe, it can be easy to assume that mobility innovation is found only in major cities. 

And yet sustainable mobility innovation is also taking place in local areas. Medium-sized cities and regions with skilled employment pools benefit from close-knit business networks, a strong quality of life proposition to attract top talent… and often the political will to support innovation.

It was in Pau, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region, that the first hydrogen-powered bus rapid transit system was recently inaugurated. A world first. 

In Brest, France’s first urban cable car opened in 2016. 

And in Hauts de France… the country’s first gigafactory producing electric batteries has just opened.

Could local areas be becoming the new testing grounds for decarbonized mobility?
