Africa has the world’s lowest motorisation rate (an average of 43 to 73 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants), yet the transport sector already accounts for 30% of the continent’s greenhouse gas emissions, largely because of an ageing fleet made up of imported used vehicles.

With Africa’s vehicle fleet expected to grow four- to fivefold by 2050, the challenges are significant: road safety, environmental impact, and access to clean, affordable mobility.

How can end-of-life vehicle management policies and transcontinental standards help Africa take a decisive step towards safer, more sustainable mobility? How can Europe, Asia and Africa align to ensure that vehicles entering African markets meet common standards for safety, production and emissions, while also incorporating requirements for recycling, maintenance and fuel quality?
