The room for manoeuvre to achieve net zero is narrowing.
Accelerating international or European public finance will be essential for the energy transitions, but ultimately, the private sector will have to fund most of the additional investment required.
Mobilising capital for large-scale infrastructure requires closer cooperation between companies, developers, investors, public financial institutions and governments. Reducing investor risk will be essential to ensure successful and affordable transitions to clean energy.
The energy revolution required to decarbonise freight transport is likely to be particularly challenging and uncertain, as it will require substantial financial resources. The energy supply is highly diverse (biofuel, biomethane, liquid or gaseous hydrogen, biomethanol, green ammonia, etc.) and technically difficult for non-specialists to understand.
In all cases, it will require substantial CAPEX investment worldwide, while optimising OPEX to provide the right energy in sufficient quantities for the new energy mix to reach net zero.
New competitive financing schemes (private and public) that support viable business models for capital-intensive, complex energy production industries and modes of transport.
