The European Commission is currently proposing measures to promote circularity in the automotive sector, covering vehicle design and production as well as the treatment of end-of-life vehicles.
This initiative will improve the European Union's access to resources and contribute to the EU's environmental and climate objectives, while strengthening the single market and helping address the challenges of the automotive sector's ongoing transformation.
Although these proposals aim to support the automotive ecosystem's transition to a circular economy, a number of existing regulations are slowing the industry's transformation.
The automotive sector's transformation, driven by the electrification of vehicle fleets, represents a unique opportunity to imagine an automotive industry that is sustainable and circular by design. Several factors are helping to accelerate this transformation: regulations on waste reuse to support circularity, the need to meet decarbonisation targets, and the growing imperative to establish resilient supply chains.
A transformation of this scale requires business models to be reinvented, industrial operations to be reorganised, new partnerships to be created and substantial investments to be made.
However, these activities are still carried out primarily by a large number of independent, loosely structured stakeholders and, to date, the direct involvement of the automotive sector's leading stakeholders in circularity remains relatively limited. New ecosystems must emerge to meet these needs.
