Women Driving Change & Leadership for Sustainable Mobility

Women represent more than half of the global population and are the main users of public transport and public spaces. Yet they continue to face major mobility, safety, and representation challenges due to systems that are not designed with their needs in mind.

According to the International Labour Organization, women accounted for only 17.3% of workers in the transport and logistics sector in 2018. The gap is even wider in land transport (road, rail, pipeline), where women represented only 11.8%, dropping to just 8.1% in Africa. Across the continent, women make up only 8% of the formal transport workforce.

Beyond numbers, the sector remains heavily male-dominated, generating barriers that affect women’s access, retention, and career progression.

As mobility undergoes major transformation, no sustainable model can emerge without fully integrating half of the world’s population. We can’t afford to ignore such a significant part of society who can support the economy and efficient mobility systems. Empowering women is essential to building resilient, fair, and future-ready mobility.
